If you are looking for a magical way to spend the last few days of August --Go to Regents Park Open Air Theatre! I do it every year without fail, and every year is just as wonderful as the previous year. This experience never disappoints or grows old...
Regents Park Garden Café
I have been going to the Open Air Theatre each August for the past 7 years. It's truly the highlight of my summer. So much more than seeing a great performance -- it is a total experience. We always start by going to dinner at the Garden Café. Depending on how you want to dine, there is something for everyone. Check out Food & Drink on the Open Air website for suggestions.
Regents Part Picnic Area
The Picnic Area at the Open Air is literally next to the theatre. For £25, you can enjoy a "picnic hamper experience" full of marvellous goodies and indulge in the sights and scents of one of the most magnificent gardens in London. (Book your picnic in advance) Could there be a more pleasant British pastime than going for a picnic in the park?
Regents Park Open Air Theatre Concession Stand/Bar
If you've just rushed to the theatre from work and don't have time for dinner, you can pick up nibbles and drinks at The Bar on your way to your seats. So convenient!
Open Air Theatre Set
Okay --so you are not allowed to take pictures at this point. (Slap wrists for my blatant disobedience) But I couldn't help myself. Every year, they create the most amazing set, totally encompassing the beauty of the theatre's exquisite surroundings. From this one set, we were believably at Maria's convent, The Von Trapp Estate, the family's gardens, playing in a stream, the music hall, and finally on those famous Austrian hills.... Brilliantly done! (I promise I did not take any pictures past this point.)
Regents Park, London
After sitting through the most wonderful experience, you exit into the early evening dusk of Regents Park. The trees are flood-lit and fairy lights twinkle in the bushes and along the buildings. We had a full moon to light our path.
Go see The Sound of Music!
Evening performances: 7.45pm (Gates 6.15pm).
Matinee performances: 2.15pm (Gates 1.15pm).Running time: Approximately 2 hours 25 minutes
Yours truly.
